What are AP Courses & Exams?
Students can often take AP, or Advanced Placement, courses during high school to learn skills that will help them in college classes. These courses are an excellent way to show colleges that you are willing to challenge yourself academically.
Many colleges and universities give credit for AP classes, making it possible for you to graduate early. Other schools use your test scores to help place you in higher-level classes when you start college. If you are interested in a specific college’s AP policy, the College Board website provides the information you need.
About AP Chemistry
AP Chemistry can be an intimidating subject if you are not familiar with the material. The course covers topics typically found in a first-year introductory college chemistry course. Students learn about things like relationships in the periodic table, atomic theory, intermolecular forces, structure and states of matter, reaction kinetics, organic chemistry and thermodynamics.
The AP Chemistry exam is three hours and 15 minutes long. It is divided into two sections: a 90-minute multiple choice section and a 105-minute free response section. Each section of the exam is worth 50% of your total score. You will not be able to use a calculator for the multiple-choice section of the exam. This should not be a big obstacle if you are well-prepared.
