Frequently Asked Questions About the SAT and ACT Tests (FAQs)

How does the SAT differ from the ACT?

The SAT and ACT tests differ slightly in layout and content. Both cover math, reading, writing and data interpretation and both have an optional essay. The SAT does not have a Science section; the ACT does. The SAT has “with calculator” and “without calculator” Math sections; the ACT allows a calculator to be used throughout its Math section. The SAT Writing and Language section contains fewer questions than the ACT English section.

What are the Average SAT and ACT Scores?

If you are struggling over your SAT / ACT scores and wondering how you stand in comparison to other students, the following data may help.

According to the College Board, the average total score was 1060 for the 1.7 million students in the class of 2017 who took the new SAT. The average for the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section was 533 (out of a possible 800 points), and the average for the Math section was 527 (out of a possible 800 points).

On the ACT, a little over two million students in the class of 2017 took the test and averaged a composite score of 21. The average English section score was 20.3, Math was 20.7, Reading was 21.4, and the average Science section score was 21.0. (The ACT score range is 1 to 36 points; a perfect section score is 36 and a perfect composite score is 36.)

Should You Take the SAT or the ACT?

Both the SAT and ACT are accepted by every college in America. There is no advantage to taking one test over the other but taking the test that best fits their skills and abilities will help students earn the highest scores.

The best way to decide which test is best for you is to take Chyten’s ACT vs. SAT Comparison Test which compresses all components of the ACT and the SAT into a single test. It is accompanied by a highly detailed diagnostic report that provides a recommendation on which test is more likely to maximize your test scores.
