What is the SSAT?
The Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) is a standardized test required for admission to private elementary, middle and high schools.
There are three levels of the test:
- Elementary Level, for 3rd and 4th grade students who seek admission to grades 4 and 5;
- Middle Level, for 5th through 7th graders who seek admission to grades 6–8;
- Upper Level, designed for 8th through 11th graders who are applying for admission to grades 9 through PG (Post-Graduate).
The test assesses a student’s Verbal, Quantitative (Math) and Reading skills to determine if he or she will be a good fit for a particular school and is an important part of the private school admissions process.
The Verbal section consists of synonym and analogy questions at a level appropriate for the student’s age. The Quantitative section covers a basic understanding of math operations and functions (for elementary-level students), and algebra, geometry and data analysis (for upper-level students). The Reading section focuses on reading short passages and answering questions about the details, tone, and vocabulary of each text.
Each student receives a scaled score and a percentile ranking based on how well the student did compared to other test takers. Each school weights test scores differently according to its own standards and requirements.
The SSAT is offered eight times per year, but most students take the test in November, December or January. Chyten recommends taking the SSAT once in the summer and then at least twice during the academic year before submitting your applications.
